Clipsy records the tab, window, screen or camera you choose and turns it into a video, all on your own computer. There is no Clipsy server, no account, no analytics, and no tracking. We cannot see your recordings, because they are never sent to us.

What Clipsy does
When you click Clipsy and start recording, it records the tab, window, screen or camera you chose, with your microphone and webcam if you turned them on. When you stop, its editor opens in a Chrome tab, where it adds zooms on your clicks, a smooth cursor, captions and the rest, and exports the finished video.
All recording, editing and exporting happens inside your browser. Everything Clipsy needs, including its fonts and the models for captions and background blur, ships as part of the extension and runs locally.
What data is involved
Clipsy handles two categories of data, both of which are declared in our Chrome Web Store listing.
Website content
The picture and sound of what you record: the tab, window or screen you chose, and your microphone and camera if you turned them on. Clipsy uses your microphone and camera only while you record, or while you preview them in the popup or settings. Chrome asks for your permission the first time, and you can withdraw it at any time in Chrome's site settings for Clipsy.
User activity
To draw the smooth cursor and place zooms, Clipsy notes where the pointer moved, where you clicked (with the size of what you clicked, and whether it was a link, button or other control), scrolling and the shape of the cursor, with timings, in the tab you are recording. For a screen recording it does this in the tab you started the recording from, and also notes where that page sat on your screen, so its clicks line up with the video.
Keystrokes are never recorded. Only if you turn on Show keyboard shortcuts in videos (off by default) does Clipsy save key combinations that include Ctrl, Alt or ⌘, such as Ctrl+K, so it can show them on screen. It never saves them from password, payment or one-time-code fields.
Both are stored only on your device. Neither is transmitted to us or to anyone else.
Where it is stored
Clipsy keeps everything in storage that belongs to the extension on your own machine: the browser's private file system for video and sound, IndexedDB for projects and pointer data, and chrome.storage for settings and the state of a recording in progress. It stores:
- Recordings: the video and sound you record, with the microphone and camera as separate files, plus thumbnails
- Pointer data: the user activity described above, which the editor needs to place zooms and draw the cursor
- Projects: your edits, styles and captions, and the videos, images and music you add
- Exports: the files you export, until you download them or clean up
- Settings: your preferences
This data never leaves your computer. It is not uploaded, not synced to a Google account, and not backed up to any server. If you use Chrome on two machines, recordings made on one are not visible on the other.
Clipsy does not use cookies. The only thing it keeps in localStorage is the height you last gave the editor's timeline.
What leaves your browser
Clipsy has no server of its own and sends nothing to us. Its pages are locked by a content security policy that blocks network connections, so it could not send your data anywhere even by mistake. There are three cases worth being precise about.
Captions (speech to text) and webcam background blur run on your computer, with models that are included in the extension. Your audio and video are not sent anywhere to be processed, and nothing is downloaded while you use Clipsy.
Exported videos and .clipsy project files are saved where Chrome saves your downloads. What you do with them is up to you. A .clipsy file contains the project and its recordings, so treat it like the video itself.
The interface contains links to the developer's website and to Buy Me a Coffee. Nothing is sent unless you click one, and then it is an ordinary page visit like any other.
What Clipsy never does
Permissions, and why each one is needed
| Permission | What it is for |
|---|---|
| tabCapture | Records the picture and sound of the tab you are on when you click Start recording. This is the core of the extension. |
| activeTab | Gives Clipsy access to the tab you chose to record, at the moment you ask it to, so it does not need access to all sites. |
| scripting | Adds Clipsy's script to the tab being recorded, to show the countdown and note the pointer and clicks. While recording it also hides your mouse pointer there, and the scrollbars if you choose; the page is put back when you stop. It never reads what the page says or what you type. |
| offscreen | Runs the recorder for screen, window and camera recordings, so recording continues after the popup closes, and opens Chrome's own "Choose what to share" window. |
| storage unlimitedStorage |
Let Clipsy keep your settings and recordings on your device. unlimitedStorage is needed because a ten-minute recording with a webcam can take hundreds of megabytes, and Chrome could otherwise delete recordings when space runs low. |
| Access to all sites | Optional, and asked for only if you turn on Keep tracking the cursor on other sites. It lets the smooth cursor and zooms keep working when the tab you are recording moves to another site. It is used only for that tab, only while recording, and turning the setting off removes it. |
| Microphone Camera |
Not extension permissions: Chrome asks you the first time you turn them on in Clipsy, and you can withdraw them in Chrome's site settings. |
Keeping and deleting your data
Recordings and projects are kept until you delete them. You can delete them one at a time in the Library, or all at once with Settings → Storage → Delete all recordings and projects. Clipsy can also delete recordings that no project uses after a number of days; that is off unless you turn it on. Uninstalling the extension removes all of its data along with it. Because there is no server copy, deletion is immediate and complete.
Children
Clipsy is a tool for making videos of your screen. It is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.
Changes to this policy
If what the extension does changes in a way that affects this policy, this page will be updated and the date at the top revised. Material changes will also be noted in the Chrome Web Store listing.
