Privacy Policy

The short version PageMark does not collect your data. It has no servers, no accounts, and makes no network requests. Everything you save stays in your own browser, on your own device.

What PageMark stores

When you use PageMark, it saves the following in your browser's local extension storage:

Highlights — the text you selected, and the address of the page you selected it on
Notes and tags you add to a highlight
Bookmarks — the address and title of pages you choose to save, and any tags you give them
Flashcard state — which highlights you turned into flashcards, and whether you have marked each one new, learning or known
Your settings — theme, default highlight colour, sidebar position and width, reader preferences, and any sites you have switched PageMark off for

PageMark only stores text you have deliberately selected and saved. It does not read, scan, index or record the pages you visit.

Where it is stored

All of it is written to chrome.storage.local — storage private to the extension on the device you are using. It is not written to Chrome's sync storage, so it does not travel between your devices, and it is not uploaded anywhere.

What PageMark does not do

✕ No account, sign-in or sync

✕ No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or tracking of any kind

✕ No third-party code, libraries, fonts or services

✕ Does not sell, share or transfer your data to anyone

✕ Does not show advertising

✕ Does not record your browsing history or pages you open

✕ Does not track how long you spend on pages

Permissions, and why each one is needed

Permission	What it is for
Access to websites	So highlights can be shown on the pages you saved them from. The extension does nothing on a page until you select text, press a highlight shortcut, or open the sidebar.
storage	To keep your highlights, notes, tags, bookmarks and settings on your device.
tabs / activeTab	To know which page you are currently on, so PageMark can show the highlights belonging to it and keep the toolbar count correct, and to open a page when you ask to jump to a highlight.
scripting	To load PageMark into tabs that were already open when you installed or updated it, so you do not have to reload every tab. Only PageMark's own bundled files are loaded.
downloads	To save an export file to your computer when you press an export button.
favicon	To show each saved page's site icon in your lists. The icon comes from Chrome's own local cache, not from the website.

Leaving the extension

Two things open a normal browser tab, and only when you click them:

Opening a highlight's source page, which navigates to that page as any link would
The Support link in the footer, which opens an external page (buymeacoffee.com/rahulsehjal)

Once you are on an external site, that site's own privacy policy applies. PageMark sends nothing to it.

Your control over your data

Export it at any time as Markdown, Obsidian, Notion or JSON — from the Library tab
Import a JSON backup to restore or merge it
Delete a single highlight, or delete everything from Settings
Switch PageMark off for any site you choose, from Settings
Uninstall the extension — Chrome deletes all of its stored data with it

Because nothing is ever sent anywhere, there is no copy of your data for anyone to hand back, correct, or erase on request. Removing it from your browser removes it entirely.

Children

PageMark collects no data from anyone, including children, and has no account system, no messaging, and no advertising.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new date at the top. Since PageMark's design is to collect nothing, any change that altered that would be described plainly here and in the extension's release notes.
